Bickers was struck and killed by an auto driven by a drunk driver as he was directing traffic as Ladder 9 backed into quarters at Madison and Hackberry following a false alarm. Bickers was knocked 90 feet by the impact. Bicker's death led to the installation of warning flashers in front of engine houses throughout the city. The firemen had been asking for such devices for some time. Bickers was 44 and lived at 1107 Olivia Lane, Price Hill.
