Nehus was killed in route to an automobile fire. He was riding on the tailboard when an auto struck the rear of the pumper and caused the pumper to swerve into a light pole. A portion of the pole snapped off and struck Nehus in the head, fracturing his skull. Nehus was 45 and lived at 1731 Dale Road.
